PHILLIPS ALUMNI/AE SCHOLARS

The 2007-2008 Phillips Scholar Alumni/ae Award

Sharon De Oliveira

Managing Trustee Arthur Emery with Phillips Scholar Alumni/ae Award recipient Sharon De Oliveira.

The Phillips Scholar Alumni/ae Award was established in 2003 to recognize one new scholarship recipient in particular who has exhibited great concern for improving his or her community as well as meeting our financial need and academic standards. The Trustees are very pleased to award a $15,000 scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year to Malden ( Massachusetts ) resident Sharon De Oliveira, who currently attends Northeastern University in Boston.

A 2007 honors graduate of Malden High School, Sharon 's activities both in and out of school have focused on creating positive change. A member of the leadership team of Malden High's Project 540, she was instrumental in this organization's work to identify needs and create action plans to improve the school community. Through the school's Key Club, Sharon also participated in charitable feeding programs and other service opportunities and was inducted into the National Honor Society for both her academic achievements and record of community service. Sharon has also been deeply involved in her church and its youth group.

Participating in Summer Search, an organization that provides support and opportunities to low-income youth, Sharon has experienced Outpost Wilderness Adventures and an exchange program to China through Experiment in International Living. With great facility for foreign languages (she is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and will continue with French at Northeastern) she will major in International Affairs during college.

Sharon writes that she loves Northeastern, although there aren’t enough hours in the day to take advantage of all that Northeastern offers, as well as keep up with rigorous course work. She has joined the International Affairs Society, where she is excited to find others who share her interests. She is participating this fall in a project called Global Pact, through which the group will form a local NGO (non-governmental organization) that will work to improve some aspect of people’s lives in the Boston area. Although it represents a huge time commitment, Sharon is pleased that she’ll both meet more people through the project and also have a chance to serve the greater Boston community.

Best wishes to Sharon, and a huge thanks to all Phillips Scholar Alumni who donated so generously to the fund for this award. Donations were matched, dollar for dollar, by a friend of the scholarship, thereby doubling each person's contribution; all monies raised were used toward Sharon 's award.
